Koppers for putting employee health and safety at the heart of corporate culture.
Pittsburgh-based Koppers is a leading producer of chemicals, carbon compounds, and treated wood products for the aluminum, steel, chemical, plastics, railroad and utility industries. With approximately 2,000 employees at 35 locations throughout North America, Europe and Australia, Koppers has made employee safety and health a central focus of their corporate culture. In recognition of the company's dedication to employee safety, the National Safety Council (NSC) recently awarded five Koppers plants its exclusive 2006 Industry Leader Award for achieving the best safety performance within the industry. In addition, the NSC also recognized another 13 Koppers plants for its 2006 Occupational Excellence Achievement award.
To earn the Occupational Excellence Award, Koppers' plants reported no fatalities, injuries, or illnesses in 2006 that involved "days away from work" at a rate that was 50 percent less than other firms in their industry. Koppers corporate-wide commitment to safety was recently summed up by Leslie S. Hyde, their Vice President of Safety and Environmental Affairs, who said "Protecting the health and safety of our employees lies at the heart of our corporate culture. We not only comply with established standards and requirements, but work tirelessly to enhance our safety programs to protect not only our employees, but our families, friends and neighbors who live beyond our plant boundaries."
