The “Steel Heart Award” for April 2007 goes to…
Pharmaceutical and consumer products maker GlaxoSmithKline for leading the way towards a new era of innovative health programs for employees
The rapidly rising cost of healthcare has become a challenge and burden for employers and employees alike. In a recent presentation on this subject Robert Ingram, vice chairman of GlaxoSmithKline's (GSK) Pharmaceutical operations, pointed out that 133 million Americans (around 45 percent) have one or more chronic diseases. Ingram went on to say that “Those 45 percent of Americans account for 75 percent of what's spent on health care, which totaled $2 trillion in 2005.”
GlaxoSmithKline sees the three keys to controlling spiraling healthcare costs as prevention, intervention and innovation. GSK has introduced groundbreaking new employees programs such as smoking cessation initiatives, company fitness centers, wellness promotion, and early screening/testing programs. Beyond the workplace GSK also partners with local organizations to spread health awareness throughout the community.
A VEO exemplifies the new face of loyalty and by setting a higher standard of health and wellness for its people (and by “putting its money where its mouth is”) GlaxoSmithKline is forging a new type of employee partnership. Employees can clearly see that the organization’s genuine concern for their health and welfare goes way beyond the “lip service” of the past.
We salute GSK – a Vibrant Entrepreneurial Organization -- for creating innovative programs that promote healthier employee lifestyles, resulting in greater job satisfaction and higher productivity. For more information on GlaxoSmithKline visit www.gsk-us.com.
