Pittsburgh Fun Facts

At KEYGroup we are proud to recognize local people or organizations that exemplify the attributes of Vibrant Entrepreneurial Organizations.

The “Steel Heart Award” for May 2007 goes to…

Giant Eagle, Inc. for building Pennsylvania’s first “Green” supermarket. A VEO shares the “big picture” that people need to take personal risks and hold themselves accountable, and Giant Eagle, Inc. has established a standard for “green living” that both individuals and organizations can look to for inspiration.

Located in Shadyside, Giant Eagle’s newly remodeled store is a model of green practices, such as energy efficiency, high air quality, and water conservation. It even features a “living green" roof. The 67,000 square-foot store received an award for Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) from the U.S. Green Building Council.

The Shadyside store will consume 20 percent less energy than comparable, conventionally designed supermarkets, through use of increased insulation, a green roof and integrated natural lighting. In addition, the store's electricity is produced by green energy sources, such as wind power. Other green features include advanced water conservation and air quality sensors to ensure fresh, clean air throughout the store. Air quality is also improved by the use of ozone-friendly refrigerants in its cooling systems. Structurally, adhesives, sealants, paints, carpeting and wood products are also low in volatile organic compounds.

But Giant Eagle, Inc. is no stranger to energy efficiency. In 2004 Giant Eagle, Inc. became the nation's first grocer to operate a Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED)-certified supermarket at one of its locations in Northeastern Ohio. But, Giant Eagle’s Shadyside location joins 59 other LEED-certified buildings in Pennsylvania that together place our state second only to California in energy efficient construction practices.

Environmental Protection Secretary Kathleen A. McGinty recently said, “Pursuing advanced efficiency technology and green building practices is good for the environment and good for business. Energy efficiency and sound environmental policies ultimately cut costs for businesses and consumers.”

With spring finally arriving in Pittsburgh and green at long last returning to our trees, it is only fitting that we honor a Pittsburgh company that sees the value of keeping green all year long!
